On 18 July 2005, HELMEPA presented INTERMEPA
to the delegates of the member states of MEPC 53 , the Marine Environment
Protection Committee of IMO, the International Maritime Organization in
London. During the presentation, the cooperation between children members
of HELMEPA and TURMEPA and their joint efforts were specifically outlined.
The Secretary General of the Organization,
Efthymios E. Mitropoulos welcoming the news of the founding of the new
association and praising this proactive initiative of MEPAs, said among
..."This cooperation of children shows the way we
should see and use the seas: as bridges to unite and keep peoples together.
May the example of the Greek
and Turkish children find followers, not only in the two countries
but in the entire world. We will then be able to say that there is
hope and with that hope, the vision and dream of a better world
for our children and the children of their children"...
On June 9, 2006, during Posidonia 2006, Germanischer Lloyd, HELMEPA Associate Corporate Member, became the first to sponsor the initiatives of INTERMEPA. Among the statements made in the Press Release they issued was the following:
..." Environmental protection, maritime safety
and security are pillars of shipping in its quest towards achieving
quality. One important approach is through the voluntary involvement
of all members of the shipping industry. HELMEPA has introduced this
philosophy 24 years ago and the results are noticable as the idea expands
